Israeli police have raided the Educational Bookshop, a family-run Palestinian bookstore in East Jerusalem, on more than one occasion, detaining owners Mahmoud Muna and his nephew Ahmad Muna and confiscating books police described as inciting violence. Among the confiscated titles: a children’s coloring book carrying a historic Palestinian slogan. According to the shop’s own account, officers pulled any book bearing a Palestinian flag and searched specifically for the word “occupation” and for maps.
The Munas were charged with disrupting public order and selling material that incites terrorism. The raids drew condemnation from the UN and foreign diplomats, and protests outside the courthouse included Jewish demonstrators alongside Palestinian ones. A bookstore is a small, specific kind of target: not a rally, not a broadcast, just shelves. What a state chooses to seize when it raids one tells you plainly what it’s afraid its own people might read.
