The Communard

Work With Us

The Communard doesn’t have a funded full-time position open right now. We’re a small, reader-funded publication, and we’d rather say that plainly than dress up a maybe as a job posting.

What full-time would actually look like

When the numbers support it — enough recurring donors and newsletter subscribers to cover a salary, not just server costs — the first hires are the ones you’d expect: a reporter who owns a beat full-time instead of freelancing pieces in, and eventually an editor who isn’t doing the job alongside everything else. We’d rather build toward that honestly and pay someone properly than pretend we can offer it today. See our support page for where that money actually comes from.

If you want to be first in line

If you want to work here full-time once that’s possible — reporting, editing, or running the parts of a publication that aren’t writing (circulation, the newsletter, keeping the site running) — tell us now. Send what you’d want to cover or do, two or three clips or examples of your work, and why here specifically, to jobs@thecommunard.com.

We can’t promise a timeline. We can promise we’re keeping the list, and that reader-funded means the fastest way to move up it is helping us grow the base that pays for it — share the newsletter, back the support page, tell people where to find us.

Looking to pitch a single piece instead of a full-time role? See our contact page — we take freelance pitches for History, Culture, Politics, Sports, and Local.
