The Communard

About

The Communard is a left-wing publication that reads current events through history. We cover history, culture, and politics, with daily and breaking news and a clearly separated editorial section.

The name comes from the citizens of the Paris Commune of 1871 — the short-lived, self-governing municipal government of Paris. We take that history as a starting point rather than a decoration: a press oriented toward ordinary people and movements rather than official power.

We do not pretend to be neutral about our values. We do hold our reporting to ordinary standards of accuracy and fairness, and we label opinion as opinion. See our editorial standards.
