The Communard

One PAC has already spent $800,000 steering a single Senate primary

The money is arriving well before most voters are paying attention, in a Texas Senate race that’s shaping up as the most expensive of the midterm cycle.

America PAC has put roughly $800,000 behind the midterms so far, with the largest single share going to Texas, where it’s backing Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign. The primary is still months out. The spending isn’t.

This is what modern political spending looks like in practice: not a late ad blitz timed to persuadable voters in October, but early positioning designed to clear a field, discourage challengers, and set the terms of a race before most of the electorate has started paying attention. By the time the ballot arrives, the real decision — who could credibly run, and who couldn’t afford to — has often already been made somewhere else.
